Cesar Guerra Peixe - 10 Ludicas, ver. solo guitar.
Melodic, sometimes exotically colored, and with the rhythms of the composer's native Brazil, this set of short pieces for guitar contains highly attractive music. César Guerra Peixe (1914 - 1993) was one of Brazil's most notable conductors and violinists in addition to being a nationally important composer. His career described a trajectory from popular music to twelve-tone, then to music with frequent folk quotations, then to a Brazilian national style but without literal folk music. The ten Lúdicas are representative of that last phase of Guerra Peixe's style. After writing the set of prelude-like pieces for guitar solo, the composer added string accompaniment. The string parts are atmospheric and provide attractive color, but the main interest remains squarely on the guitar throughout. The title comes from the same root meaning "play" or "game" as in the word "prelude." The opening movement, "Fantasieta" (Little Fantasy) creates the mood of improvised folk music. This is one of four movements in which the guitar writing is in the traditional classical music style. In the other movements, there is some unusual element to the playing technique, designed to imitate some regional instrument or style.
The second movement, "Dança negra," suggests African elements with a repeated figuration and a syncopated chord that suggests a percussion instrument. "Organum Accompanhado," the title of the third movement, means "accompanied organum." "Organum" was a late development of church chant before the Renaissance, with the chant melody sung at the parallel fifth. The melody is on two low strings struck at once, with a chord figuration in the higher strings, making a striking and mysterious effect. "Birimbau," the fourth movement, is named after a western Brazilian Indian mouth instrument similar to the Jew's harp and the player pinches the string to make a buzzing sound. The melody is simple, resembling the Japanese tune "Sakura." In this movement, the additional strings add more than in most, extending the deliberately simple texture of the guitar part. The fifth movement is called "Modinha." This is a familiar term in Brazilian music meaning a sentimental song and goes back in history as far as the 1600s. Playing technique here is standard and the music has the musing, ardent quality universally associated with Brazilian love songs. The most exotic-sounding movement, "Ponteado cum ligaduras," has a pinched sound, suggesting a dulcimer. The seventh movement, "Diàlogo," gives the guitar two voices to imitate, a low one and a high one, with an unusual suggestion of Asian music. In this movement, Guerra Peixe provides the string orchestra with a more independent voice, sometimes replacing the guitar in one of the phrases of the "dialogue." "Diferencias Brasileñas" is Spanish for Brazilian Variations. The work is like an improvisation on a Spanish-style theme and is in standard playing style. "Notas repetidas" is a toccata-like episode with drum patterns on a repeated note. The final movement, "Urbana," is a rapid piece in the playing style of popular music, featuring a rock-like rhythm that propels the piece.
Jaime Mirtenbaum Zenamon - The Black Widow, sheet.
1995. Edit. Margaux.
Zenamon was born in Bolivia as the son of European immigrants. He studied guitar and composition in Israel, Spain, Portugal and in various countries in South America where he was a student of numerous teachers including Abel Carlevaro. Extended concert tours took him through South America and to Europe, the Middle East and the United States. In addition to touring, he composed a multitude of pieces for guitar and various instruments and instrumentations, guitar and chamber ensemble and guitar and orchestra. These pieces reflect the conditions of his nomadic professional life. Both the unconventional rhythm and harmony of contemporary guitar music as well as the South American folk instrument tradition have been major influences upon his compositional style.

FRANZ LISZT HUNGARIAN RHAPSODY No.2 Arrangement for 4 Guitars by William Kanengiser / Jon Minei
This Hungarian Rhapsody by Franz (Ferenc) Liszt is only the second of fifteen such nationalistic pieces by the flamboyant composer, but it has emerged as the most popular and widely performed. This is due not only to its infectious tunes and enticing coloration, but in contemporary times through its frequent use as film score material, most notably in Tom and Jerry and Bugs Bunny cartoons. Written in 1847 as a solo piano piece for Count Laszlo Teleky, the piece has been rearranged for orchestra numerous times. These orchestrations have often changed the original key of the piano score (D-) and freelyinterpreted the capriccioso rhythms and cadenzas in the opening Lassan section. This arrangement presented here for guitar quartet was undertaken in the same spirit of extrapolation; the key was raised to a more guitar-friendly D natural, and the original piano score as well as the orchestration by Karl Muller-Berghaus were used as source material.
